Job Title Vice President for Student Affairs
Job Summary

The Vice President for Student Affairs reports to the President, serves as the chief student affairs officer, and is responsible for creating and supporting an environment that promotes the growth and development of students and facilitates the process of learning. The Vice President is responsible for program development, financial management and personnel administration for all student development functions. This person serves as the primary advocate and spokesperson for the student development division to the College community and to the community at large.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•Oversees student services that support the college’s educational mission and contribute to the growth and well-being of its students; creates environments that help students grow, develop, and learn, and that enhance the quality of their lives.
•Makes recommendations to the President concerning the mission and scope of the Student Affairs program; develops policies to assess and strengthen curricular and co-curricular linkages and to implement and improve activities and programs.
•Oversees adherence to the Spelman Code of Conduct with oversight for the adjudication of breaches of the code.
•Develops and implements a dynamic strategic plan for the Student Affairs division which supports the educational mission of the College.
•Works collaboratively in partnership with the Provost, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and the faculty to ensure an integrated, systematic approach to student development and success.
•Serves as the focal point for student concerns, initiating and coordinating policies, programs and responses related to a broad range of student issues.
•Oversees student services that support the college’s educational mission and contribute to the growth and well-being of its students; creates environments that help students grow, develop, and learn, and that enhance the quality of their lives.
•Provides leadership in promoting out-of-classroom academic interactions between students and faculty.
•Oversees the operation and provides direction to the Office of the Dean of Students, Housing and Residence Life, Counseling Services and Student Access Center, Student Health Services & Campus Wellness, Student Life and Engagement, Student Judicial, and Office of the Dean of the Chapel.
•Oversees the operation and provides direction in the areas of Public Safety and Food Vendor in partnership with Vice-President for Business and Financial Affairs & Treasurer.
•Works to promote a climate that fosters civility, mutual respect and high academic, personal, and social standards; understands the importance of fostering cross campus partnerships that promote student success and retention to include partnerships with Title IX and Career services.
•Identifies major issues and coordinates the development of programs and policies which may involve the participation of campus units in a proactive manner.
•Serves as the central source of research and information on student issues, utilizing research methodologies, to assess current student values and assess major programmatic needs.
•Maintains contact with other institutions to identify issues, concerns, and trends.
•In conjunction with the President, assumes the leadership role in the resolution of major student campus disruptions.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree required, and doctorate preferred. A minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, including crisis management required. Administrative experience on a residential liberal arts campus is highly desirable. Must be knowledgeable about student development theory and demonstrate appreciation for the unique aspects of the goals and mission of a historically Black, women’s college and have proven success in working with a diverse student population. Also, demonstrated effectiveness as a supervisor of student affairs professionals, proven leadership skills, and knowledge of best practices in student affairs, as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a senior management team are critical for this position.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse group of people and organizations, and the ability to lead a team and work collaboratively are essential. Excellent oral communication skills are required when presenting information and responding to questions from internal and external customers in one-on-one or group situations. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations to top management, Board of Trustees, and other constituencies of the College is essential.

This position has supervisory responsibilities for the following areas: Housing and Residence Life, Student Life and Engagement, Student Health Services, and Counseling Services. There is shared supervisory responsibility for the Department of Public Safety.
